
Emine Sevgi Özdamar was born in Malatya (Turkey). She is a German actress and writer of Turkish origin living in Berlin. From 1965 to 1967 she stayed in West Berlin as a labor immigrant. Upon her return to Turkey she became an actress, returning to East Berlin in 1976 where she worked in Brecht’s tradition at the Volksbühne. In 1982, she had her debut as a writer. In 2007, she was elected member of the “Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung“ (German Academy for Language and Poetry). Among the numerous prizes she won as a writer was the Kleist prize (2004) and the Adelbert-von-Chamisso prize (1999).
